The big talks

Does anyone else have this happen to them? You are in the car with the kids and they ask the big questions. Where do babies come from? Why is the sky blue? Why isn't there world peace?
Is it just my kids that do this? They are lucky that I haven't wrapped the car around a tree, they always catch me off guard.
My little one likes to really get me in the car. "Mommy, remember that time I ate the cake with the nuts in the restaurant?" "Remember how it made my throat hurt?"
"Yes dear I do"
Of course I remember, how could I ever forget?
I somehow have to teach them to ask the big questions at home and not while I'm driving.....

It's not just food....unfortunately.

So, my child has a life threatening food allergy. We have to be vigilant about it to keep her safe. We also have to be vigilant in regards to her other allergies. She's pretty much allergic to every outdoor and indoor allergen that you can think of. This includes cats and dogs. The last time that she was in a house with dogs her face pretty much swelled shut within 30 minutes. She was accidentally licked by a dog a few years ago. That left a rash and red streak on her face for days. In some ways the animal allergy is more difficult than the food. I can bring safe food with us wherever we go. She can't however go to a house that has pets. So, she has friends that come to play at our house. It's another way that her life is restricted. She does get very excited when friends come over! She's so young though, what will happen as she gets older? What about those lovely teen years?
Do any of you have a teen with allergies? Pet allergies? How do you handle all of this, what's ahead for us? I love to be prepared....Thanks!

Really? It's not a joke

Today I came across some videos from NickMom. A few videos actually that make fun/make light of food allergies. I'm stunned. Truly stunned. When did making fun of a life threatening medical condition become ok? Would someone make fun of a child with diabetes? Cancer? I seriously doubt it. Then why, when 1 out of 13 kids has a life threatening allergy, is it ok to make fun of them? Stuff like this makes me sad but then it just makes me work harder. Awareness is the key.
Now to write Nickmom and let them know what I think......Here is their contact information if you would like to send them your thoughts.

We're free!

Recently we had a date night! That's right folks, we got out with out the kids. A play and dinner! Les Miserables. I have waited 20+ years to see this masterpiece and it did not disappoint. We loved it. I, of course, cried. Cried to the point where I had to bite my lip and put my hand over my mouth. It was amazing. I can't imagine having the courage to get on stage and perform like that. Well, I can't carry a tune so I wouldn't be on that stage anyway.
After the play we went out to eat. We didn't have to cut up anyone's food. We didn't have to worry if there was anything for my picky eaters to eat and we didn't have to worry if anything was safe. I will admit publicly that it was so nice. A few hours of no worries.
Ah.....
How often do you get out of the house with out the kids? It's hard to get out but every once in a while...it's a great treat.

The cost of it all

The cost of food allergies is astronomical. I'm not just talking about the $. Although the $ is crazy. I spend $40 something every year on special Purim cookies. Ok, I'm too lazy to find a recipe and give it a go. I'm not known for my baking skills. I'm talking about the emotional toll too. The constant worry when she's not with me. Is she ok? Does she have her food with her. Was she left out of something? How am I going to find those ingredients and get everything made by tomorrow? Ugh. I'm a worrier by nature but this doesn't help.
Will she end up being a worrier? She's not now. She certainly knows how to take care of herself and she is a free spirit. Will she always stay that way? I sure hope so.
Worrying can eat away at you..........

The title

The title of this blog is the work of my little one. One day we were in the car running some errands. An ambulance drove by with it's lights and siren on. She asked if that is what she would have to ride in if she had an allergic reaction. I said "yes". Why does she always ask the hard questions while we are in the car? Anyway, after I answered her she became very quiet. Then, our of nowhere, she said "oh, please keep me safe!"
Heartbreaking......

goals

Goals. We should have goals. Isn't that what we always here? What are you goals,  your hopes, your dreams? What do you want to accomplish in your life? Tough questions. Really tough. What do I want to do with my life. I'm 41 years old and I have no answers at all. Well, I have one. I want my kids to be happy and healthy. I want to keep my child with a life threatening condition safe. Besides the daily task of keeping her safe I want to do what I can to find a cure and to raise awareness. So, that's why I started this blog. If I can get the word out maybe people that are not involved with food allergies will learn something. Maybe they will understand what our life is like......
So back to goals. How can I do all of this? I can write a children's book about allergies. I can get it published. I can raise funds and start a foundation. The foundation can raise awareness and funds can be given to researchers and they will find a cure!
Am I crazy? Don't answer that.....
I have sent the children's book off to nine publishers. Fingers crossed.
